Violent Femmes這一張於1983年推出的同名專輯是我擁有他們的唯一的一張(前一陣子在台北茉莉二手唱片行購得)，卻讓人見識到他們把玩folk-punk的功力，爽朗明快的原音吉他彈奏，強力有勁的貝斯撥彈，豐富多變的鼓擊節奏，再加上Gordon Gano青澀帶點歇斯底里的嗓音與演繹方式，讓folk與punk兩個差異頗大的樂種有了完美的融合，而folk的敏銳善感與punk的憤怒昂揚其實也相當適合用來說明賀爾蒙正快速噴發的青春期，Violent Femmes整張專輯裡的歌詞也都圍繞這種面臨生理轉變所帶來心裡不安的情緒：焦慮緊張，希望消失無形卻又極度渴望得到他人的注意，然而結果卻總是不如人意，反而更加挫折，甚至讓人灰心，懷疑自己是否真的能夠過渡到成人時期。據說，Violent Femmes裡大部分的歌曲都是Gordon Gano在高中時期寫成的，難怪blister in the sun、kiss off、please do not go、add it up、gone daddy gone等歌曲聽來是如此地青春洋溢，即使灰色又有何妨。

[1] had是have(有)的過去式，句型＝If S+Ved…, S would/could+原V…＝與現在事實相反的假設（Ved＝過去式動詞），如If I had enough money, I would buy the car.假如現在我有足夠的錢，我會把車買下→事實上現在我的錢不夠。gun (n) 槍。
[2] I’d是I would的縮寫，would是will(會)的過去式。shoot (v) 開槍、射擊。hole (n) 洞、孔。the sun 太陽，獨一無二的事物前面要加定冠詞the。
[3] love (n) 愛，would的時態是連續上句的I would shoot…，仍然是假設句。burn (v) 燃燒，burn down sth＝burn sth down＝燒光、燃盡某物。city (n) 城市。for you為你、替你。此兩句指作者之愛火如同被射下太陽一樣強，足以燒掉整個城市。
[4] time此指「時機、時刻」較妥，had用過去式在if子句中表達與現在事實相反的假設，if I had the time如果我有機會的話，表示目前苦無機會。
[5] stop (v) 使…停止，world (n) 世界。make (v) 讓…、使…（處於某狀態），make+受詞+受詞補語，mine我的(人或事物)，make you mine＝make you my love/girl讓你成為我的愛人。mine當受詞補詞。
[6] every day 每一天，當主詞。would會，延續上一句的假設語氣。stay (v) 保持、持續，same (pron) 不變的事物、一樣，stay the same保持一樣、不變。with you有你在一起，with (prep) 和…一起、有…。
[7] give (v) 給，give sb sth＝give sth to sb＝把某物給某人，give sb back sth＝give sth back to sb＝把某人還給某人，back (adv) 回。dream (n) 夢。
[8] show (v) 出示、給…看，show sb sth把某物給某人看。what是複合關係代名詞，相當於the thing(s) which，譯作「…的東西」。now (adv) 現在。
[9] might是may的過去式，而may/might have+過去分詞＝對過去事件的猜測，如He might have read it before.他以前可能有讀過，用may比用might的語氣還確定。有時會用來抱怨或責難，如You might have let me know earlier.你要是早點讓我知道就好了。
[10] been是be動詞的過去分詞。might have been(過去)可能是，what might have been當初可能發生的事情，是作者埋怨對方未接受自己，要對方看看如果接受自己的話，情況就不一樣了。
[11] for是連接詞，因為，比because還文言的用法。tear (n) 眼淚，cried是cry(哭)的過去式，you cried是關係子句當形容詞修飾tears，the tears you cried你哭時流過的眼淚，當句子的主詞。
[12] would是will(將會)的過去式，此指過去流的淚「會…」，表「過去的未來」。fade逐漸消失，away (adv) 完全不見，fade away消逝無蹤。
[13] I’ll是I will的縮寫，will是情態助動詞，將會，後須接原形動詞。be是be動詞的原形。by (prep) 在…旁邊，side (n) 身邊，will be by your side將會在你身邊。
[14] when (conj) 當…時候，帶領時間副詞子句設定主要子句發生的時間，並連接兩個子句。they他們，但歌詞中不知所指為何，可能指對方的新歡，請大家自行意會。come (v) 來。say goodbye說再見。
[15] live (v) 活、生活，to有in order to(為了…)之意，fight (v) 戰鬥，another (adj) 另一個的，another day改天。live to fight another day是英語俗諺He who fights and runs away may have to fight another day.(戰鬥而逃跑之人改天仍能再戰→留得青山在，不怕沒柴燒)的簡略版，但就不知作者用此句是否為此意。
[16] excuse (v) 原諒，if (conj) 如果、假如。if子句裡用過去式的動詞表示「與現在事實相反的假設」。例如If I had money, I would buy it.如果我現在有錢，我就買了。
[17] spoke是speak(說)的過去式。too太，soon快。if I spoke too soon，如果我現在話說得太快（事實上我沒有喔），作者的心態有點爭扎的味道，話都已說出口，又強辯自己沒說太快。
[18] eyes雙眼，followed是follow(跟隨)的pp，have followed是現在完成式，指從過去就一直follow到現在。always (adv) 總是。around (prep) 在…四處，room房間。
[19] the only唯一的，God上帝，此指作者所愛的對方。that關係子句當adj修飾God。I’ll ever need我任何時候都需要。
[20] hold on本指抓住某物或保持某姿勢，引申為「堅持下去」。wait for sth to+原v＝等待某事如何發生。moment有「重大時刻、成功之時」的涵意。find me找到我。
[21] 此句是I hope (that) I didn’t …的省略。hope希望，可接that名詞子句當受詞。did是無義助動詞do和does的過去式。
[22] wait for my heart to be…等待我的心…。heart心。unbroken未破碎的、完整的，是broken(破碎的)相反詞。但沒有unbreak這個動詞，故不宜解釋作be+pp的被動式，所以by the seams應視為「在接縫處」，有的歌詞版本說是by the sea(在海邊)，說不太通。
[23] let (v) 讓，let+受詞+原v＝讓某人做某事。fly (v) 駕駛飛機載…。to (prep) 到。the moon月亮。
錯過了八零的金屬、後龐克與新浪潮，直接從九零的Grunge與Brit-Pop聽上來的我們這輩，幾乎每人都能說出一段與Oasis的愛恨情仇。然而，與音樂無關的負面新聞未曾減少，新專輯也一再而再讓我失望，那個晃晃悠悠的，騎著腳踏車至唱片行買了(What's The Story) Morning Glory?的下午是漂浮得離我越來越遠了。
即使一個半小時的演出缺少了任何一首來自Be Here Now與Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants的歌（雖然以Fuckin' in the Bushes做為Intro），這次以宣傳新專輯為主的巡迴依然調配出了接近完美的歌單。諸如Live Forever、Cigarettes & Alcohol、Wonderwall、Don't Look Back In Anger、 Rock'n'Roll Star這些幾乎倒過來我也能跟著合唱的經典曲目滿足了所有人的期待；更別提Morning Glory與Champagne Supernova這兩首我當晚的Highlights。當它們的副歌響起，我仍以一種無法置信的姿態端詳著眼眶旁的溼熱液體。
